Will a hydroponic tower fit in your apartment?

Check height first. Makers list 54 inches for the Gardyn Studio 2, 64 inches for the Gardyn Home 4, and 54 to 79 inches for the Original Farmstand. Footprints run from 17 by 12 inches to 30 by 30. A full 20-gallon tank adds about 167 pounds of water (our math from USGS figures).

Hydroponic towers grow a lot of food on a small patch of floor. The catch is height and weight, which the box doesn't always make clear.

How tall are they?

Measure from the floor to the ceiling, or to the bottom of a window or shelf above. Then leave room for plants growing out of the top. Heights the makers list, as checked on their pages in October 2026:

How heavy is the water?

The US Geological Survey gives water's weight as about 62.4 pounds per cubic foot (USGS). That works out to about 8.3 pounds a gallon (our math). A full 20-gallon tank holds about 167 pounds of water (derived), before the tower and plants. On a balcony or an older floor, check your lease or building rules first.

Does it need a window?

The Gardyn towers and the Farmstand Nook have lights built in, so they can work with little or no daylight. The makers list Tower Garden and the Original Farmstand for sunny spots. To use one indoors, check the maker's page for a light kit.
