How we work
We help you find gear that fits your home: your counter, your shelf, your window and your lease. Specs come first. Buying comes after, once you know what fits.
Where our numbers come from
Every spec comes from the maker's own product page or the store selling it. We record sizes, watts, tank sizes and weights as written. When a maker doesn't list something, we show "Not listed". We don't guess. When two pages disagree, we use the maker's figure and note the difference.
Harvest times, yields and "grows faster" claims are the maker's words, not ours, and we say so. Growing advice links to the university extension service or government agency it came from.
We use AI tools to help research and draft our pages. Every fact we publish is checked against a source we name.
How the fit check works
The fit check matches your answers to the specs: where the item goes, the daylight your spot gets, what you want to grow, whether you start from seed or a plant, the height you have and whether there's an outlet. For gardens and lights, "height" means the tallest the maker says it gets, with the light raised and the plants grown, not the size of the box.
Yearly running cost
Many indoor gardens need pods, refills, plant food or a membership to keep growing. We show this the same way for every system, whether or not the maker pays us. Each product page names the pods and plant food its maker sells, says whether generic pods or your own seeds work, and says plainly if a system is sold only with a subscription. Most makers don't say how often pods and plant food run out, so we show the yearly running cost as "Not listed" rather than guess. We look at refill prices again every 90 days.
Where to buy
Once you've found something that fits, we try to make the next step useful too.
Some products are sold by one store; others by many. We don't try to list every store. We show the buying options we think are most useful, based on price, stock, the type of seller and where the product is normally sold.
Some of those stores may be affiliate partners, which means Fennel & Fifth may earn a commission if you buy. When buying options are reasonably comparable, we may put an affiliate partner first. If we find a clearly better option elsewhere, we show it whether or not we earn anything.
Affiliate relationships never decide which products match your space, and they never change the product information we give you.
Prices and stock
Where we show a price, we show the date we checked it, and we take it down once it's more than 30 days old. We aren't a price-comparison site and can't promise the lowest or current price. The store's page has the final say. We recheck store links about once a month.
What we don't do
We don't test products in our own home, and we don't pretend to. No maker or store pays to be listed, ranked or described more kindly. We don't give nutrition or food-safety advice of our own; we link the agencies that do. Found a mistake? Tell us on our contact page and we'll fix it.
More on how we earn money is in our affiliate disclosure.
